Skin Fermented Pinot Gris 2020

Our Skin Ferment Pinot Gris 2020 is a unique opportunity to try a pink grape vinified like a reserve red wine, spending 34 months aging in neutral oak barrels. With 20% whole cluster, 19 days of skin fermentation, and twice daily punch downs, it is a deep copper, sometimes pale garnet color. In the glass, notes of rhubarb, almond, dried cranberries, lemon rind, and toffee. The wine is textural with tea-like tannins and balanced by a stony minerality and moderate acidity. Pair with nuts, kimchi, or pomegranate glazed chicken.

Vineyard Notes
The winter was mild with virtually no bud damage, and April and May were cooler than the long-term average with delayed bud break. Although May and June were very dry, approximately 60% below average, July was warmer than average, so by the end of July, accumulated Growing Degree Days (GDD) were close to average. Even though July rainfall was 20% above average, total rainfall for the growing season was a scant 14.9 inches, almost half of the total long-term average. By the end of October, accumulated GDD were close to the ten-year average. Disease pressure was virtually absent. The cool nights during the fall helped to retain acidity and freshness, while the warm days provided the grapes a sense of ripeness and balance.
Production Notes
100% Pinot Gris
Other Notes
Skin-contact wines are white wines made like red wines. They ferment with the grape skins, which give wine its color, hence the term "orange wine."
